This presents a daily problem for Manager Joe Torre, who has more than eight competent everyday players at his disposal, many of them high-salaried veterans. So before every game, Torre considers which players are hot, which ones need rest and how the opposing pitcher can be exploited. On a given day, Jason Giambi may start the game on the bench. Melky Cabrera or Andy Phillips, or both, may join him there. When the Yankees played the Detroit Tigers yesterday at Yankee Stadium, Johnny Damon was not in the starting lineup. Before yesterday’s 5-2 victory against the Tigers, Torre said that having so much depth was a double-edged sword. “When you didn’t have a bench, you didn’t have to worry about trying to keep people as sharp as you need to,” Torre said. “We have a lot of guys sitting on the bench that have been regular players. It’s important that they get their at-bats. “The advantage is, you don’t run into wearing guys out out there either. Substitute people and give guys a day off here and a day off there.” When the Yankees faced the Orioles left-hander Erik Bedard on Wednesday, Torre went with a lineup full of right-handed batters. That meant Giambi, Robinson Cano and Bobby Abreu began the day by taking a seat. Torre used Cano and Abreu as pinch-hitters later in the game. Torre said that he would like to give Derek Jeter a rest in the coming days. Wilson Betemit will probably replace Jeter at shortstop. Since being traded to the Yankees last month, Betemit has started at first base, second base and third base. Asked if he could start behind the plate if needed, Betemit laughed. “I’ve never done it, but if they need me, hey, I’ll do it,” he said. Torre said his players understood the daily predicament he faced, and that had made his job easier. Damon, who started in center field during Friday’s 6-1 victory against the Tigers, watched Cabrera start in center yesterday. “You understand we have a real tough team with a lot of good players,” Damon said. “You kind of have to just be ready. For me, it’s either playing left, center, right, first, D.H. Always up in the air. You never know what you’re doing. For me, I have to understand that.” Before every home game, the Yankees’ lineup is posted on the inside of the clubhouse door. Players sometimes find out if they are starting by looking at the white sheet of paper. The bench players are listed near the upper-right-hand corner of the sheet. Shelley Duncan’s name was on the list of bench players yesterday. He started Wednesday and hit a tying home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. A day later, he pinch-hit for Damon in the sixth and remained in the game. He did not play Friday. “It’s always really interesting to see this lineup,” Duncan said as he pointed to the lineup sheet, which was only a few feet from his locker. “ Every day, I look at the top-right corner and see the bench guys. There’s always one big name on there. It’s pretty fun to have a bench like that.” He added: “Being a competitor, you want to be in the game, all the time.
