NEW YORK -- Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran will miss the start of the
regular season after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday in
Colorado. The Mets announced in a statement that Beltran, who missed more
than two months last season with a bone bruise in his right knee, "had a
worsening of osteoarthritis" recently, prompting him to undergo surgery.
The Mets said Beltran is expected to return to baseball activities in 12
weeks -- in mid-April -- but there was no estimate given on when he might
join the Mets on the field.
More to come.

update
NEW YORK -- Two and a half months before Opening Day, the Mets have already
been dealt a devastating blow. And it comes in the form of -- what else? --
injury news.
Carlos Beltran will miss the start of the regular season after undergoing
arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday in Colorado. The Mets announced in a
statement late Wednesday night that Beltran, who missed more than two months
with a bone bruise in his right knee last season, decided to have surgery
after the pain returned recently.
Beltran is expected to resume baseball activities in 12 weeks -- or around
April 7 -- but the team gave no estimate of when he might join the Mets on
the field. It is possible Beltran will miss only the early part of the
season. But after the nightmare of 2009, another injury setback for one of
the team's premier players does not bode well for what lies ahead in 2010.
After returning from the bone bruise last September, Beltran played in 19
games and said he was pain-free. The bone bruise hadn't fully subsided, and
Beltran said he would undergo monthly MRIs during the offseason. But he
dismissed concerns that he might eventually need surgery.
"It's not going to be a problem," Beltran said after the Mets' season finale
on Oct. 4. "I'm going to put myself in the best condition I can be and I'll
be ready for spring training."
According to the Mets, everything was going according to plan until recently.
Then Beltran apparently made plans of his own.
The Mets said Beltran did not feel pain in his early offseason workouts. But
as a result of what the team described as "a worsening of osteoarthritis" in
the knee, "The symptoms returned to the point where pre-spring training
conditioning became too painful."
Then, on Wednesday, the team said Beltran "elected" to undergo surgery with
what it described as his "personal physician," Dr. Richard Steadman. There
was no mention of any consultation with the team or its medical staff, as is
typically the case.
Mets executives were not available for comment late Wednesday night, but a
spokesman said a to-be-determined team official would speak to reporters on a
conference call Thursday.
It wasn't immediately clear who will take Beltran's spot in center field
until he returns. Among players currently on the roster, Angel Pagan is the
most likely candidate, with Jason Bay and Jeff Francoeur better suited for
their corner outfield positions.
Pagan started 59 games in center field in Beltran's absence last season and
hit .306.
The only relatively good news for the Mets is that Beltran did not undergo
microfracture surgery, a much more serious procedure that has been performed
on other athletes with bone bruises. But that is little consolation to a team
that is desperately seeking to put its injury woes behind it.
Only several hours before news of Beltran's surgery broke, David Wright stood
in the Mets' clubhouse after a community function and expressed optimism
about the team's chances in 2010. But he added a caveat.
"Not to continue to harp on it, but we have to find a way to stay healthy,"
Wright said. "It's important for us to go out there and have the horses for
162 games, minus a few here and there, but we have to have our horses in the
lineup for us to do what we're capable of doing."
Now one of those horses is down again. And the Mets are limping before they
even approach the starting gate.
