6. A case study 2: spectral considerations at3.5 GHzNortel is partnering
with the Alberta Special AreasBoard (SAB) and Netago Wireless to build
Canada旧first commercial WiMAX network at 3.5 GHz inCanada, and recently
completed a live-air trial. Themain goal of the trial was to determine
theperformance, configuration and operation of thetechnology. Tests were
performed to determine datarates, signal-to-noise ratio, modulation rate,
receivedsignal strength indicator, transmit power and range. Two types of
schemes were used: an outdoor unit with15 dB antenna gain and maximum
transmit power of 23dB and an indoor unit with a 6-7 dB antenna gain
witha maximum transmit power of 24 dB. Data throughputperformance using
UDP, TCP and FTP protocols weretested in the down and up links. The trial
measured 9Mbps data throughput using UDP and 5 Mbps usingFTP/TCP. Figure 6
depicts the range and data rateperformance carried out by Nortel. This
case studyhighlights that WiMAX networks can be successfullydeployed at 3.5
GHz and it becomes even moreimportant when deploying mobile WiMAX
networks[6].Fig. 6 The IEEE 802.16-2004 trial results of Nortel.7
. Comparison of Wireless technologiesThe use of Wireless technologies
is beginning toappear similar to the initial development of therailways.
