Laboratories in Taiwan that meet the criteria have not been asked to take part
in any phase of the multi-country SARS research collaboration, because, in
deference to China, the WHO continues to designate Taiwan a “Province” and
lists Taiwan under China’s name on its membership roster. This discrepancy
precludes Taiwanese scientists, medical professionals and health agencies from
participating in any aspect of the WHO, including the SARS collaborative
network. On the same premise, the WHO does not
provide any firsthand information to Taiwan. Taiwan is seeking to join the WHO
. Until then, Taiwan will have to find other ways to contribute and to make a
difference—that is our commitment, to society and to ourselves.
