29 May 2005 Harvard University Boston, Massachusetts To the students and faculty of National Taiwan University: On behalf of the Harvard College in Asia Project (HCAP), I would like to express our profound gratitude to the students and faculty of National Taiwan Universit y. By any possible standard, the 2005 NTU/Harvard Conference was an incredible succ ess. Students on both sides learned a great deal- and shared memories that will last a lifetime. I personally believe that I saw and learned more about Taiwan and Taiwanese culture in this one-week conference than I could ever learn in a book. From the first hello to the last goodbye, the Harvard delegates were amazed by t he level of generosity, courtesy, and kindness shown to us by the students and f aculty of NTU. To the students, our friends for life: Thank you. You worked tirelessly to put on an incredible conference. Everything you did, you did flawlessly. With you , we shared many experiences, laughs, ideas, and memories. The Harvard delegate s were very impressed by your presentations, and we were grateful for the opport unity to discuss with you pertinent political and social issues. Your professio nalism and kindness are exemplary- a view held by every member of the Harvard de legation. To the faculty: Thank you. Without your help- financial and other- this confere nce would never have succeeded. A year ago, the NTU/ Harvard 2005 conference wa s just an idea; you helped make it a reality. The HCAP officers were also very impressed by the personal kindness and generosity you showed us. HCAP would also like to acknowledge the contribution of everyone else who played a part in the 2005 NTU/Harvard 2005 Conference. From the campus tour guides to the distinguished speakers to the student performers we saw the last night… ma ny different people helped make the conference a success. HCAP is very grateful ! I recently met with the President of Harvard University, Larry Summers, and desc ribed to him the NTU/Harvard conference. President Summers, and our many other official advisors, including Dean William Kirby, are also very grateful for the generosity and kindness shown to us by the students and faculty of NTU. We live in a world that is growing smaller every day. It is more important than ever that future leaders of government, business, and academia understand and a ppreciate the ideas and perspectives of their peers from around the world. Perh aps one day, an American graduate of the conference will cross paths with a Taiw anese graduate of the conference. It might be in a state room during diplomatic negotiations, or perhaps in a board room during a business agreement… They wi ll share many memories- but more importantly, they will understand each other be tter. It is my hope- and the fundamental hope of HCAP- that the success of the NTU/Harvard 2005 Conference has laid a foundation for greater future understandi ng and cooperation between leaders of Taiwan and the United States. The HCAP organization is looking forward to receiving a delegation from NTU this coming February at Harvard. I have instructed one of my officers to get in tou ch with Philip about this over the summer. The officers and I are also very hop eful that NTU will be able to receive another delegation from Harvard next year. I look forward to discussing this further at a later point in time.
