Students rally in support of streaker
2004/6/30
TAIPEI, Taiwan, The China Post Staff
Several college students yesterday staged a protest outside the Formosa Plastics
Corporation with a bird cage and a poster of a nude man to protest against what
they call an unreasonably harsh punishment on a Chang Gung University student w
ho ran around the campus naked earlier this month.
The student, identified as "Francisx" by the media, received two major demerits,
two minor demerits and detention for running round the school with his sex orga
n revealed.
He said the display was a penalty for losing a bet on NBA basketball with his cl
assmates.
However, some of his classmates took his nude photos and posted the pictures on
the Internet, prompting the school to deliver a sever punishment on the wrongdoe
r.
Local reports also speculated that the university, which is financed by Formosa
Plastics conglomerate under the leadership of business tycoon Y. C. Wang, toughe
ned the penalty on the engineering student because the conservative Wang is outr
aged by this folly.
In a show of support for "Francisx," several students from National Taiwan Unive
rsity, armed with a bird cage and a hand-drawn nude man poster, demonstrated out
side Formosa Plastics Corporation to call on the company to appreciate the "cour
age of young people."
They said Francisx ran naked on campus to prove that he is a man of his word.
The company maintained that Wang did not interfere with the school's disciplinar
y decision.
When asked to comment on the incident, Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou noted that it i
s unnecessary to resort to extremely harsh punishment on young college students.
Chang Gung's President Pao Chia-chu, who has said the university will not change
its decision, avoided the media yesterday. His secretary said the university wi
ll not comment further on the incident.
Meanwhile, "Francisx" has found a strong support base on the Internet with numer
ous net surfers leaving encouraging messages for him on chatrooms and bulletin b
oards.
The college junior broke his silence for the first time since the incident via a
n interview with the mass-circulation China Times, which was published yesterday
.
"I didn't run naked for the sake of being naked and I didn't mean to strip down
in the beginning," he was quoted as saying. "I really thought the Lakers would w
in the match."
"I know I made a mistake and I am willing to accept the punishment. But I hope t
he punishment can be a little lighter."
Francisx also told the newspaper that his grades were enough to get him into Nat
ional Cheng Kung University, a prestigious university in southern Taiwan, but he
chose Chang Gung because he admires Wang.
The student also said he is afraid that the university will try to kick him out
after the controversy quiets down.
