He has even gone so far as to say: “It sometime seems to me that the whole of philosophy I but a meditation of Shakespeare.” Notice, not a “ meditation on Shakespeare,” but a “meditation of Shakespeare,” that is, Shakespeare’s meditation. In this paper I will look at some of the uses to which Levinas puts Shakespeare, and reflect on what he might mean by saying that the whole of philosophy is a meditation of Shakespeare. The latter question, of course, raises the ancient and continuing debate regarding the proper relation between philosophy and literature, truth and “fiction.” 外文系系辦 --
