Abstract:
Greimassian or “Paris School” semiotics begins by positing the existence
of a semantic universe that is coextensive with the concept of culture, and
which is defined as the set of its value systems. Describing such a semantic
universe as a whole, however, would be an exercise in exhaustivity, and so a
micro-semantic universe is proposed, comparable in scope to that of a single
literary discourse universe. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
will therefore serve the purposes of this study, which aims to explain certain
facets of the way in which this semiotic methodology has heuristic utility in
the analysis of canonical North American literary texts.
