國立臺灣大學外國語文學系學術演講 DFLL Faculty Colloquium Strategy Use in Simultaneous Interpreting of Different Directions Speaker: 臺大外文系張嘉倩助理教授 Time: 2007年4月11日週三下午3:30-5:00 Venue: 臺大舊總圖一樓外文系新會議室 Abstract: Simultaneous interpreting is a complex cognitive activity that requires the interpreter to listen to what the speaker says and render it immediately into another language, listen to the speaker’s next message, store the message in memory before retrieving it again for translation, and monitor his or her own output, all at the same time. To overcome the cognitive overloads that are often inevitable during this process, interpreters employ a variety of strategies, ranging from anticipation and adjustment of ear-voice-span to summarization and omission. This talk will introduce some strategies frequently used by professional interpreters and discuss the possible differences between strategy use in simultaneous interpreting of different directions, i.e. from a foreign language into a native language or from a native language into a foreign language. Examples from simultaneous interpreting between Chinese and English will be given to illustrate the functions of each strategy and the mechanism that prompts an interpreter to choose one strategy over another.
