Q: What motivates this piece? Your culture, education, family, mentor, or
anything else?
A: This piece is my research into humanity, and the idea comes from the
Holocaust we German imposed on Jewish people. We spent months in Jewish
museums in Berlin to see what we could be inspired by exhibitions and dead
bodies.
Q: Is there any German body manner in this piece?
A: There are no German dancers in this piece, and I didn't develop it in a
German manner, but rather deals with the more general human body manner.
Q: What's your main message that you want to express to we audiences?
A: I want to express the body, the miracles that we can hardly experienced
and felt in our daily life, and make it known to the public. There are still
some big issues that haven't been dealt with, so I decided to extend this
piece into a trilogy, with the second part, S, deals with the sexuality,
and the third part, noBody, deals with death and issues beyond material
being.
Q: Why focus on Jewish museums? Maybe WWII or some human tragedies can also
be treated?
A: We choose the Holocaust as a beginning, but we also want to broaden it and
make it universal, since crimes are happening throughout human history.
Moreover, different dancers with different personal histories and bodies
helped me with the extension.
Q: What is the costume concept?
A: Costumes represent the body system: neural, muscular, skeleton, organ, and
so on. We try to show the body in the plainest way, without social and
political meanings. Moreover, costumes are designed individually for each
dancer to suit their characteristics.
Q: How do you contrast the neutral body with the socially and culturally
constructed body? What do dancers experience or understand after this
performance?
A: We human carry our history of our culture, hence everyone is constructed,
even the only possibility of neutral body, baby, would be constructed after
birth.
A: Dancers are given lots of freedom to explore their body based on their
experiences. We challenge our limits, push ourselves in a new way, and try to
break down our old habits or styles of body moving. For example, we pick up
people with their skin, which is a very different way of exercising our body.
Q: What's the image of the girl with long braids?
A: I can't explain every movement in that part, but I got this idea from a
girl with lots of short braids all over her head, some Jewish building or
structures with strong angles and lines, and possibly the mythology with a
blind girl.
