☆ This paper explores how the emergence of a regional │ │
│ economy between Taiwan and China has created an environment │
│ conducive to the development of situational singles │ │
│ and that development impacted the lives of all of │ │
‧ those involved and posed a threat to the institutions of │
★ marriage and family, and resulted in adjustments to it on │
a personal and on a societal level in both countries. │
│ By leaving their families behind in Taiwan, │ │
│ many married Taiwanese businessmen in China become │ │
│ “situational singles” who are free from the daily │ │
│ responsibilities to their families and the social constraints│
│ on their marital status. │ │
│ Many of them establish sexual liaisons with Chinese women. │

│ Consequently, some Chinese women are institutionally single but │
▇ they literally live or associate with married Taiwanese businessmen
˙ in China as lovers or mistresses. Many Taiwanese women are married│
. but they literally become heads of single families in Taiwan. │
│ In this context, the social realities and meanings of being single or
│ married for many Taiwanese businessmen and for the involved │
│ Chinese and Taiwanese women are shaped and redefined by the gendered
│ and sexualized process of economic integration across the Taiwan Strait.
│ Flexible approaches are taken upon by or forced upon those mobile │
│ and and immobile social actors toward intimate relations. │
│ Situational singlehood becomes the cultural logic of flexible intimacy
│ in response to the growth of this regional economy in particular, │
│ and to the expansion of global capitalism in general. │
