Kirby is T. M. Chang Professor of China Studies at Harvard University and Spangler Family Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. He is a Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor. He is Director of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and Chairman of the Harvard China Fund. A historian of modern China, Professor Kirby's work examines China's business, economic, and political development in an international context. He has written on the evolution of modern Chinese business (state-owned and private); Chinese corporate law and company structure; the history of freedom in China; the international socialist economy of the 1950s; relations across the Taiwan Strait; and China's relations with Europe and America. His current projects include case studies of contemporary Chinese businesses and a comparative study of higher education in China and the United States. He is Honorary Visiting Professor at Peking University, Nanjing University, Chongqing University, and Fudan University. He has held appointments also as Visiting Professor at the University of Heidelberg and the Free University of Berlin. Before coming to Harvard in 1992, he was Professor of History, Director of Asian Studies, and Dean of University College at Washington University in St. Louis. At Harvard, he has served as Chair of the History Department, Director of the Asia Center, and most recently, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. As Dean of Harvard's largest school from 2002 to 2006, he initiated major reforms in undergraduate education in Harvard College; enhanced Harvard's international studies at home and abroad; increased substantially financial aid in the College and in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences; supported the growth of the Division (now School) of Engineering and Applied Sciences; and oversaw the construction of major new buildings in the Life Sciences, Engineering, and the Arts. During his tenure the Faculty expanded at its most rapid rate since the 1960s. Professor Kirby holds degrees from Dartmouth College, Harvard University, and (Dr. Phil. Honoris Causa) the Free University of Berlin. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. 總統接見美國哈佛大學「費正清中國研究中心」主任柯偉林 2010/4/27【華衛新聞記者陳泰宇報導】 　　馬英九總統在總統府接見美國哈佛大學「費正清中國研究中心」主任柯偉林 （William Kirby)，對訪賓來台，表達歡迎之意。 　　 總統表示，透過柯主任的安排，在台灣時間4月6日有機會與哈佛師生以「追尋現代化 」為題，進行一場視訊會議，將這幾十年來哈佛、中國大陸與台灣的關係做一個總結，並 檢討從兩岸追求現代化的過程中，所出現的許多挑戰、挫折及成果，再對近年兩岸關係發 展趨勢做一說明，最後歸納為「追求富強、自由、民主」三個討論面向。 　　 總統說，柯教授是民國史專家，專長為研究二次大戰前中華民國與德國的歷史，而他 也是哈佛大學著名的講座教授，受到該校很高的推崇。柯教授此次訪台將與台灣學術界進 行交流，政府也希望能與美國學術界有更多接觸與合作機會，加強台灣在國際學術界的聯 繫。 　　 總統指出，近年來台灣到美國留學的人數大約為2萬8千人，遠比30年前少了許多，主 因有部分學生選擇到英國及澳洲留學，希望有更多的台灣學生到美國一流學府就讀，無論 是對開拓視野及建立聯繫，都有很大的幫助。 　　 柯偉林主任首先對總統接見表達感謝之意，並表示，與總統進行視訊會議是個很美好 的經驗，哈佛師生都留下深刻的印象。而他在中央研究院任職期間，即對台灣的學術開放 性十分讚賞，期盼未來雙方有更多交流機會。 　　 美國哈佛大學「費正清中國研究中心」主任柯偉林（William Kirby)上午由外交部次 長沈呂巡陪同，前來總統府晉見總統，國安會秘書長胡為真也在座。 《治國週記》談教育　哈佛教授：台灣可望成為亞洲第一！ 記者陳思穎／台北報導 (2010/10/02) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjgJvYaqnow&feature=related 在今(2)日出爐的《治國週記》中，總統馬英九邀請到一位經常觀察兩岸三地高等教育的 學者－哈佛大學的教授柯偉林（William C. Kirby）一起談論台灣教育的未來發展， 柯偉林指出，台灣的高等教育制度若能與經濟一樣開放，就能從各個管道尋求最優秀的 老師和學生，台灣不僅會成為亞洲第一，在未來幾十年，也會成為吸引人才的大磁鐵。 馬英九表示，明年這個時候，在台灣的大學校園當中，就會有大概2千人，是來自中國大 陸的新鮮人，他們會跟台灣的大學生一起展開大學的生活，這是台灣教育史上的第一次。 馬英九指出，邀請柯偉林來來，有一個很重要的原因，就是他主張承認大陸學歷和開放陸 生來台已經有5、6年了，在國內、外也都有人支持，但只有柯偉林有正經八百地跟他提出 建議。 柯偉林表示，過去兩年來，台灣的高等教育在課程、通識教學，及主要教學外之重要議題 等方面，獲得的進步令人印象深刻。柯偉林強調，在馬英九過去主張承認大陸學歷與開放 陸生來台時，他就發現自己與馬英九想法類似，都是要鼓勵教育的交流，就如同在經濟、 文化領域已有的交流一般。 柯偉林強調，「台海兩岸教育的交流，我相信這是當務之急，讓中華民國的大學提升未 來優勢，在競爭日益激烈的高等教育世界中立足，與來自中國大陸的學生和教師有更緊 密的互動，並開啟一個制度，在我看來已變得越來越緊密」。 柯偉林指出，台灣的高等教育制度若能與經濟一樣開放，就能從各個管道尋求最優秀的 老師和學生，台灣不僅會成為亞洲第一，在未來幾十年，也會成為吸引人才的大磁鐵。 美國哈佛大學教授柯偉林應總統邀請，分享哈佛大學維持頂尖學術地位的教學秘訣，並 為台灣通過修正陸生三法後的高等教育走向把脈。柯偉林教授指出，台灣的高等教育制度 若能與經濟一樣開放，就能從各個管道尋求最優秀的老師和學生，台灣就會成為亞洲第一 ，也會讓台灣在未來幾十年，成為吸引人才的大磁鐵。 --
