1.Q: What kind of God is "God" in the Old Testament ?
A: The God in the Old Testament is just, kind and merciful. He knows
who is righteous and who is evil or with wrongness. He will bless the
righteous and punish the evil. However, he will give those who with
wrongness an opportunity to turn over a new leaf.
C: It will be better to give examples. e.g. from the story of the first
murder or the story of Joseph...etc. Moreover, this God, in comparison
with the one in the New Testament, might be more awe-inspiring.
2.Q1: Why was God partial to Abel ?
Q2: What symbolic meaning is there for the story of the first murder ?
A1: It is because Abel's offerings had breathed and lived just like human
beings, and animals are more sacred than grains.
A2: It shows human's evilness, and seems to be foretell of the flood.
(Because God used the flood to punish hum an's evilness)
C1: I mentioned in class that the animal Abel offers is a firstling. This
shows Abel's respect since the first born is precious. (sacred too)
3.Q: What is the relationship between God and his people ?
A: People in ancient time are afraid of God's power, and this has something
to do with human's fear of natural disasters. Although they try to resist
the disasters, all thir effort is in vain. On the other hand, for fear
that human may conquer God, God also limits human's abilities. To
conclude, God try to lead people to the way it plans.
C: Yes, people respect God but they also fear God because their God is a
punishing God. We can tell it from the story of the Flood.
But from the stroy of Exodus you may find people also have a hard heart
for they also disobey God. Many times, they receive punishments from
God for they wonder away from God's path.
4.Q: Why did God want to destroy the wicked human beings ?
A: It was because God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth,
and that every intent of the thoughts was only evil (The first murder)
continually. The Lord was sorry that he had made man on earth and
he decided to destroy the human being he had created.

Q2: What significance is there for such blessings from his father ?

A2: Isaac blessed him that God may grant him from the dew of the heavens
and the fat of the earth, people serve him and nations bow before him,
he can also overlord his brothers and those who curse him would be curse.
It means that Jacob can dominate a lot of things. In other words, from
his father's blessing he can own the power to control the world.
C2: Another point is that a father's blessings can really bring one
boundless rewards. They equal blessings from God.
6.Q1: What is special about Joseph's story ?
Q2: How does dream influence his life ?
A1: God conveys his message through Joseph's dreams without informing him
his identity and makes Joseph act as a prophet. The most special feature
of Joseph's story is God's absence which other stories do not show,
through this God reveals his power and his surpassing of merel human
expectation.
A2: First, Joseph dreams a dream that all his brothers will bow to him. It
guides the way he should follow, though it is harsh. Second, Joseph
solves the dream of Pharaoh, that makes him more powerful and wealthy.
Those dreams even make it better the relationship between Joseph and his
brothers.
C: These dreams foretell future and later Joseph serves as a dream
interpreter. In other words, he seems to be the mediator between God
and his people.
7.Q1: Why does Job receive so many afflictions ?
Q2: Is his suffering justified ?
Q3: Why does the author write this work ?
A1:
A2:
A3:
8.Q1: Why does God plant the tree of good and evil in the garden of Eden ?
Q2: Why does the lord God forbid the man to eat the fruit from the tree ?
A1: God's initial purpose to plant the tree of good and evil is to give Adam
Eve a holy symbol that life is not only related to God but also relies
on God. Also, we can think of it as a trial to test their will to
resist temptation.
A2: Because God's order is the highest principle, human should obey it. Only
when obeying the order can human complete body and soul.
9.Q: Why does God allow a serpent to tempt Eve and Adam, which consequently
caueses their fall ?
A: God create Eve and Adam, so he trusted them to obey Him. He didn't think
that the serpent would succeed in seducing them. Although God believed in
Eve abd Adam to listen to Him, He still wanted to make sure. However,
despite God's faith in them what happened wasn't completely unexpected to
God.
C: A bit contradictory.
10.Q1: What can (eating) the fruit bring to us ?
Q2: What's symbolic of this fruit ?
A1: The fruit brings awareness, the ability to determine the moral values
of human beings.
A2: The symbol of the fruit is wisdom, for in the Bible it did document
what the fruit represent. Also, the deep meaning of the fruit is
referring to the temptation given by the serpent, indicating that fruit
can be sweet as well as life, but also may be harsh as the serpent.
