As it turns out, they also have an opportunity to put a serious hurting on Las Vegas casinos next week. One perceptive (or crazy) person took a $10 flyer on the Virginia Commonwealth Rams to win the National Championship. At 5,000 to 1 odds, that small bet could now cost the Las Vegas Hilton $50,000.00 if the Rams win the national title. What’s even more amazing, this bet was placed before the NCAA Tournament began. But it also could have been worse – at one point VCU was a 9,999 to 1 bet to win it all. VCU winning the national championship was considered a serious long-shot when the tournament began - so much so that you couldn’t even bet on VCU right after the field was announced. Their participation in the First Four opening round in Dayton meant you could only bet on the Rams by taking the “ Field” at 200 to 1 odds. What’s more, with either Butler or VCU guaranteed to play in Monday’s championship game, Vegas as a whole could take even more of a bath than the Hilton. Mike Colbert, book manager at the M, told the Las Vegas Review Journal that he took some big-money bets on VCU at 16-1 before the Sweet 16. And, over at Caesars, sportsbook analyst Todd Furhman wrote a ticket on the Rams at 500-1 in January. Futures bets are popular in Las Vegas sportsbooks, as fans (and crazy people like “Mr. 5,000 to 1 on VCU”) can bet on a team to win a championship long before the actual event occurs, often at astronomical odds. Many times, futures bets are as worthwhile as lighting your money on fire, but the payoffs can be big. Just ask whoever is holding that magic $10 ticket right now. --
