When the Magic and the Miami Heat played a back-to-back a few weeks ago, Shaquille O'Neal kept calling Grant Hill "partner" during the games. After inadvertently slapping Shaq across the face on one play, Hill said Shaq told him, " 'Hey, is that any way to treat me, partner?' " Grant and Shaq . . . Partners? How about the two former Magic players joining forces to buy the Magic one day -- or at least a piece of the franchise? Hill says he and Shaq have discussed the possibility -- however a long shot it might seem. "You know Shaq's been talking about wanting to buy the team," Hill said. "We were talking and I said, 'Hey, I have a little money. I'd like to do something like that.' We'd be the Isleworth Boys." Sources within the Magic say the club would not be opposed to doing business with Shaq and Grant down the road, in the event they sell the team. I'm not sure how Magic fans might react. Shaq left and it's almost as if Grant -- because of his various injuries -- was really never here. Some players talk about buying a team, but as Magic Senior VP Pat Williams has said, "They like to use somebody else's money." Michael Jordan apparently lent his name to the Washington Wizards, not much else. Hill said he's willing to put up real cash -- his own. He and Shaq have to be worth, what, at least a half-billion -- give or take a shoe deal? Clearly, Grant and Shaq will be looking to spread their entrepreneurial wings when they retire. How close is Grant to hanging them up? Hill told the Sentinel in early January he might retire after his contract expires following the 2006-07 season. But other things might come into play next season or this summer: A possible buy-out of his contract or a trade of his cap-friendly deal. Magic Assistant General Manager Otis Smith said as far as he's concerned, Hill will return. "He's still our best player when he's out there and you need veterans on your ball club, too," Smith said.
