News of the Milwaukee Bucks trading Ersan Ilyasova to Detroit could produce
ramifications for the Dallas Mavericks.
The Bucks are trying to get as far under the salary cap as possible to make a
run at a prime free agent, perhaps the Mavericks’ Tyson Chandler.
That would make sense, given that coach Jason Kidd helped get the most out of
Chandler in 2011 when Kidd was the point guard and Chandler the center on the
Mavericks’ championship team.
A reunion could benefit both the Bucks and Chandler, although he has stated
his preference for staying in Dallas.
Meanwhile, the Pistons acquired a power forward who gives them insurance
should in-demand restricted free agent Greg Monroe sign an offer sheet that
is deemed unworthy of matching.
That also brings up the question of whether Monroe would be a fit for the
Mavericks. It would require a change in philosophy since Monroe is not a
stretch-four like Dirk Nowitzki.
But he is a young, rebound-happy big man that still is improving and could be
a strong pairing with Chandler Parsons for years to come.
Consider this the start of the free-agent frenzy that always dominates the
NBA summer months. Teams can officially start talking to free agents on July
1.
