And it wouldn’t be surprising if some arguments broke out along the way. In the Mavericks’ backcourt, the odds are better that Devin Harris, Jameer Nelson and Raymond Felton will figure out how to cohabitate rather than relocate, although anything’s possible in the NBA. And at least one teammate is expecting tempers to flare, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. “They’re going to fight,” Tyson Chandler said of the point guards. “We got three starting point guards. You can’t ask for better competition. I think there’s going to be a lot of fights in training camp. You have guys who are going to push each other, and the point guard position is crazy. I love it because you want a competitive atmosphere.” In that case, Chandler should have a big crush on training camp because competition for playing time, particularly in the backcourt, is going to be a hot topic leading up to the season. Harris, Nelson and Felton have played in a combined 1,959 games. They have started 1,610 of those games, although it’s worth noting that Harris didn’t start a single game for the Mavericks last season, settling into a strong role as the finisher at point guard rather than the starter. Nelson at Orlando and Felton in New York started every game they played last season. So how is this three-headed point guard situation going to shake out? “I don’t know,” Nelson said. “I’m here to compete and to win. That’s my main focus. That’s why I’m in tip-top shape and will be ready for whatever I face. I’m a guy who’s always been doubted, and things have never been given to me. So I’m comfortable with competing for what I have to get.” How the point guard logjam unfolds is what training camp is for, of course. Coach Rick Carlisle has proved to be a master when it comes to implementing his strength-in-numbers philosophy. When there are multiple good options at one position, they tend to sort themselves out during camp. “A team can never have too many playmakers,” Carlisle said. “They can all play with or without the ball, so in my mind, they aren’t just point guards, they’re basketball players.” Which brings us to the possibility that the three point guards will do a lot of the NBA’s version of “bunking together,” i.e., playing together and perhaps with Monta Ellis on the floor whenever Carlisle elects to go with a small lineup. Harris already has made his opinion known that he believes he and Nelson or Felton can co-exist on the floor together. All of the point guards have a decent 3-point eye, can run the pick and roll or spot up on the weak side to keep the defense honest. “We’ve all played off the ball before,” Harris said. “It’s not a problem. ” Added Nelson about whether he and Harris could play together without stepping on each other’s toes: “I think so. We’re both veteran guards, and we know how to play off the ball and we obviously know how to play with the ball on the pick and roll. “From the outside looking in, Dallas runs a lot of pick and rolls. And I wouldn’t think they would change it up for anybody, no matter what. You have definitely the best-shooting power forward ever, so why would you change. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Nelson and small forward Chandler Parsons will be the newest Mavericks to learn the benefits of playing with Dirk Nowitzki, who even at this advanced stage of his career makes life easier for everybody else on the court because of the attention he draws. “We got a lot of pieces that are new,” Nelson said. “It’s not just point guard. It’s just a new group.
