And in Nowitzki’s case, he believes the overall health of the team is on the rise — for no other reason than he is intrigued about the prospects of getting on the floor with Brandan Wright for the first time this season Wednesday. Wright missed the first 23 games after a left shoulder injury. Nowitzki missed Saturday’s game with his gastro problems. Against Memphis, he expects to rekindle what turned out to be some nice chemistry with Wright last season. “It was obvious last year,” Nowitzki said. “We play well off each other. He ’s good at the stuff I stink at. “He plays above the rim. On those rolls and little floaters and little hook shots, he’s as good as anybody in this league.” Yep, those would be things that don’t fall into Nowitzki’s wheelhouse. But those attributes do make his life simpler. “Teams have to respect his rolls to the basket,” he said. “If they don’t, it should open up some of our shooters. And on defense he’s fast and athletic and can protect the rim, block some shots. He looked really sharp to me [Saturday]. And he’s only going to get better from here and get in better shape.” Wright had 19 points in 19 minutes in his first game. That included 9-of-10 shooting — all without Nowitzki on the court. When they do team up, it will be Nowitzki’s job to take a defender out to the perimeter, leaving one fewer opponent to clog things up for Wright on his moves to the basket. The only concern with Wright’s return is that it creates a bit of a crowd in the front court with DeJuan Blair and Samuel Dalembert also at center and Nowitzki at power forward. “It’s the kind of problem you want,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “We got a lot of guys that can help. We’ll keep talking to all our guys and make sure they’re always ready. “And there’s going to be nights when certain guys will be the right guys to play and other guys may not. As long as everybody understands we’re all pulling for the same thing, which is to win games, we’ll be all right.” Nowitzki, who said he felt sluggish Monday after a couple of days of not being able to retain many fluids or solids, is optimistic that the center position — easily the weakest on the court last season — could actually be a strength with Wright back in the rotation. “We got a couple different options,” he said. “Blair has been phenomenal for us all season, being physical, rebounding and pushing guys around. Sammy is the longest of the bunch. And B-Wright is a great athlete who can finish around the rim. All three of them bring something that the others don’t have.
