Mayo, 24, tweeted the news at about 10:30 p.m., saying “I will be signing with Dallas!” Moments later, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tweeted, “Welcome to the family OJ. We are fired up !!” All of the Mavericks’ summer acquisitions had been one-year agreements, but a source said that Mayo will get a two-year contract, with a player option for the second season. Mayo has averaged 15.2 points during his four NBA seasons, all with Memphis. Though primarily a shooting guard for the Grizzlies, the Mavericks view him as having the ability to play both guard positions. Dallas also sees Mayo as an explosive athlete who can get to the rim, as well as the free-throw line, and be part of an effective pick-and-roll tandem with Dirk Nowitzki. Mayo came off the bench the last two seasons in Memphis, but he may well become the Mavericks’ new starting shooting guard. With Jason Kidd’s departure, Dallas already will have a new starting point guard, possibly Darren Collison, who was acquired last week from Indiana. The 6-4 Mayo’s best seasons in Memphis were his rookie and second year, when he averaged 18.5 and 17.5 points per game respectively. His role diminished the past two seasons. Last year, he averaged 12.6 points on 40.8-percent shooting, including 36.4-percent from 3-point range. The free agent was coveted by a number of teams, including the Lakers, Bulls and Suns, but when it came down to it, Mayo apparently felt his best chance to thrive was in Dallas.
