Many view Chandler as a dominating defender near the basket and a player who throws down thunderous dunks on offense. But there is certainly more to his story. In a recent article on SI. com, Lee Jenkins goes in depth about Chandler's upbringing. The story begins with how Chandler grew up working with his grandfather on a farm in California's Central Valley. On that farm, Chandler did jobs like picking cotton, driving a tractor and milking cows. The seven-footer includes his own story of how his grandfather, at 80 years old, was trying to raise $180 last summer to pay for NBA League Pass on DirecTV so he could watch his grandson play for the Mavericks. He raised the money by picking walnuts. Chandler won't soon forget how he discovered his grandfather's work during a phone conversation they had. "I think about that conversation now when I'm getting ready for a game," he said. "There are people who worked--who picked walnuts by the side of a road--to watch us play.
