It appears unlikely that former Maverick Darrell Armstrong will be rejoining
the team anytime soon.
The personable point guard, who was a tremendous locker-room presence when he
was with the Mavericks from 2004-06, was waived by Indiana on Monday.
Indications around the league were that the New Jersey Nets, who lack depth
at point guard, were eager to claim Armstrong off the waiver wire.

If that's the case, the Mavericks – who are last on the waiver list due to
their league-best record last season – would not have a chance to offer the
39-year-old Armstrong a contract.
Armstrong has said he wants to play one more season. If he were to join the
Mavericks, it might be as a sort of player-coach. Avery Johnson filled a
similar role on Don Nelson's staff in 2001-02 and '02-03.
Briefly: The Mavericks signed three roster invitees: swingmen Darvin Ham and
Jared Newson, and center Jamal Sampson. ... Newcomer Trenton Hassell was
excused from Monday's media day and today's two practices. Johnson said
Hassell's father is ill. ... All other Mavericks passed their physical exams
with no problems and were on hand for media day. The roster stands at 18
players. The Mavs can carry 15 during the regular season.
