Two pitchers, right-hander Travis Chick and lefty Ryan Feierabend, made their big-league debuts, while infielder Oswaldo Navarro cracked his first Major League hit in Seattle's 10-0 loss to Toronto on Wednesday. All three took home a game ball. "Travis and Ryan both acquitted themselves well," manager Mike Hargrove said. "They threw strikes, which is good to see. They went after hitters. It was good to see young kids do that." Chick took over in the fifth inning and allowed four hits, but no runs in three scoreless frames. Feierabend tossed a hitless final two innings. Navarro hit a sharp single to right in the eighth inning in his first official at-bat. He had a sacrifice bunt Saturday. "I know [Jays starter A.J. Burnett] throws hard. I looked for that pitch and I swung," Navarro said. "I'm very happy." Chick, picked up in the Eddie Guardado trade with Cincinnati on July 6, had been waiting the entire homestand to get in. His parents also have been waiting, having flown here from Tyler, Texas, when he was called up last Friday. "I didn't want to sit here and think, 'It's the big leagues,' and freak out," Chick said. "When I got out there, I just pulled my hat down and threw strikes." Feierabend followed Chick, tossing a 1-2-3 eighth. He was a victim of an error in the ninth, but a double play eased him out of trouble. Feierabend faced the minimum, striking out two. "Once I saw the score and saw Travis go in, I had a little feeling I was probably the next guy to go," Feierabend said. "It was amazing, all the fans and stuff here." The reason the two youngsters were used was because two other young pitchers, starter Cha Seung Baek (3-1) and reliever Cesar Jimenez, were treated rather rudely by the Blue Jays. Gregg Zaun did the most damage, hitting a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, and driving in a career-high-matching five runs. Baek, who held Texas to just four hits in seven innings in his last start, didn't make it out of the Jays' nine-run fourth inning. He gave up six runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings for his first loss since being selected from Triple-A Tacoma on Aug. 22. When Baek was removed in the fourth, he told the coaches that his shoulder stiffened during the inning. He will be monitored this week, but is not expected to miss his next start. John Hattig started the Jays' fourth-inning scoring with a bases-loaded double that hugged the right-field line into the corner. Hattig, who also had his first career RBI, later scored on Reed Johnson's single to left. The Jays continued to reload against Jimenez, also a September callup. He walked in one run, then yielded Zaun's slam on a 1-0 fastball. It was Zaun's third career slam and his 11th home run of the year to match his career high. His home runs came from both sides of the plate. The nine-run fourth matched the Jays' biggest output in an inning this season, done twice previously, on June 2 vs. Tampa Bay and July 17 against Texas. Burnett (8-7) went eight innings to pick up his sixth victory in his past eight starts. He scattered six hits, walking two and striking out a season-high 11. Once the game was out of reach, the passion remained high for those two Mariners pitchers ready to enter the game. "As soon as I crossed to the dirt out of the outfield, I told myself, 'Keep the ball down; throw strikes,'" Feierabend said. He had watched Chick succeed and said, "that relieved the pressure pretty much. I thought, 'If he can do it, I can do it, as well,'" It was a fitting finish for the two pitchers. Chick and Feierabend were teammates and close friends at Double-A San Antonio. Feierabend followed Chick in the rotation there. "That is kind of fun," Chick said. "We get called up on the same day, make our first appearance on the same day and do well on the same day. So there's something special between us." The Jays took two of three from the Mariners, who now depart on an 11-game road trip to Kansas City, Texas and Chicago.
