The track was recorded in August 2001 at Stanbridge Farm studios during the initial demo sessions for what was intended to be Mansun's 4th album. As most fans will know, this album was never completed as the band split up in 2003. When Paul Draper and Parlophone got around to compiling the 'Kleptomania' collection in 2004, the original master tapes of 'South Of The Painted Hall' were tracked down from Abbey Road to be remixed for inclusion on the record. However, one small problem soon presented itself: the lead vocal track was missing. Various calls were put into the producers and recording studios that Mansun had used over the years to try and track down this missing piece of the puzzle. Unfortunately after several weeks searching, the hunt was finally abandoned, and the original vocal parts were never found. The rest of 'Kleptomania' was complied and released, and 'South Of the Painted Hall' looked set to remain a lost gem. In 2005 when work began on compiling 'Legacy (The Best Of Mansun)', the archive was raided one last time and somewhere in a dusty corner a solitary demo CD featuring a rough unmixed version of the track was discovered. This is the only complete version of the track known to exist and it is the version you hear today.
