One can't help but wonder how well Sheryl Crow's new song "Soak Up The Sun" will do. In any case, "Hands Clean" is Alanis's first top 40 hit on the Hot 100 since 1998's "Thank U," which peaked at #2 in airplay and later "debuted"/peaked at #17 on the Hot 100 when airplay-only singles became eligible to chart. Tantric's album falls off the Billboard 200 again after a new chart run, bringing its total chart life to 46 weeks. It is certified gold. Hot 100 ------- Airplay growth is the story of the week. On the R&B/Hip-Hop front, Ashanti's "Foolish" and Usher's "U Don't Have To Call" both increase by 8.4 million in audience impression. With 66.5 million and 64 million, they both surpass "Fallin's" months-old record of 63.8 million. And to think that just two weeks ago, Tweet's "Oops (Oh My)" became only the second song to break the 55 million barrier... One reason behind this phenomenon is the expansion of R&B/Hip-Hop radio audience, which is at its all-time high. On the Hot 100, "Foolish" enjoys an audience increase of 16 million and leaps #9->#4*. Fat Joe's "What's Luv" (featuring Ashanti) almost matches the feat with 15.5 million in growth, climbing #5->#2*. With 'NSync's "Girlfriend" (featuring Nelly) inching up to #5*, Linkin Park's "In The End" becomes the only entry in the top five that does not involve a hip-hop artist. #6 and #7 positions are held by rock bands Nickelback and Puddle Of Mudd, while #8-#10 are back to the R&B/Hip-Hop territory (Usher, Ja Rule and Tweet). In fact, among the new top 10 hits in 2002 (excluding lingering hits from 2001), the only one that did not involve a R&B/hip-hop artist or a rock band was Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head," a #7 hit. (LeAnn Rimes's "Can't Fight The Moonlight" peaked at an unlucky #11 in its 34th chart week, missing the opportunity to register the longest climb to the top 10 in Hot 100 history.) Cher's "Song For The Lonely" debuts at #85. Not because radio has suddenly discovered the song - the track peaked at #3 on the Bubbling Under chart based on airplay alone - but because a maxi-single has been released. Scanning 4,920 copies, it is #7 on Hot 100 Singles Sales and #1 on Maxi-Singles Sales. The song also becomes Song For The Clubs as it climbs to #1 on Hot Dance/Club Play. Cher's album "Living Proof" drops #33->#47 in its fourth week and sells another 26,300. Cher has logged 51 Hot 100 entries to date, spanning a good 36 years and 9 months. She joins Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney and George Harrison in the list of artists who have charted on the Hot 100 during the '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, and '00s, although Cher is the only one who covered all five decades with solo singles. There is one act, though, who has charted during every decade since the '50s: the Isley Brothers. Billboard 200 ------------- Four albums debut in the top five, the first of such occurrence since September. Yet overall album sales are still lower than last year's corresponding week. "Now 9" bows at #1 as expected, but first-week sales of 419,000 is the lowest in the series since "Now 4." It continues a downward trend since "Now 7's" 621,500, until which point each installment had opened bigger than the previous one. Jay-Z's last three studio albums (excluding "MTV Unplugged") averaged an opening sales of 482,000, while R. Kelly's last album sold 534,000 out of gate. One has to say, therefore, that their collaborative project "The Best Of Both Worlds" fails to live up to its title. Even worse, it scans only 223,000 to place #2. R&B newcomer Glenn Lewis earns a #4 spot with sales of 85,500, just above Jimmy Buffett with 78,500. This is only Jimmy Buffett's third top 10 album in his 32-year career; the previous two occurred in the mid-1990s. This album, released on Buffett's own label, is #1 on both Internet Albums and Independent Albums. CORRECTION ---------- The last update stated that Green Day's "International Superhits!" had just fallen off the Billboard 200. It was in fact still on the chart, at #176, and drops off this week.
