Neither is in fact accurate, considering this entry is based on combined reports for all GHV2-related megamixes, instead of one single megamix or even different remixes of the same megamix. On a separate note, the video has always been listed as "Madonna Megamix" on the VH-1 Monitor. It took the megamix six weeks to climb into the top 10, the longest for any Madonna single since at least "Rescue Me" (whose trajectory I do not know). "Bedtime Story" reached #10 in its fifth week and #1 in its 10th week, the slowest rise among all Madonna singles. "Buenos Aires" jumped #12-#6* in its fifth week and peaked at #3 two weeks later. The "Holiday 2001" video (Drowned World Tour montage) has been aired on VH-1, but has not appeared on the VH-1 Monitor. Alanis Morissette's "Hands Clean" debuts at #65 on both the Hot 100 and Hot 100 Airplay. It is #26* on Top 40 Tracks and #16* on Adult Top 40. This is her first Hot 100 hit in almost three years - "Unsent" had a short run in February 1999, peaking at #58. "Joining You" received moderate Modern Rock airplay and both "So Pure" and "That I Would Be Good" dented Adult Top 40, but none of them broke into the Hot 100. The debut of "Hands Clean" is especially impressive because it is based on airplay before the track's official Jan. 22 add date. "Hands Clean" spent a lone week on the Hot 100 Bubbling Under chart, at #7 last week. In comparison, 'NSync and Britney Spears's latest singles are both detained on Bubbling Under for a second week. The video for "Hands Clean" ranks #16 on this week's VH-1 Monitor. Alanis's new album "Under Rug Swept" will be released on Feb. 26 and debut in the 03/16 issue. Michelle Branch's second single "All You Wanted" is only knocking the door at the radio (#23 on Hot 100 Bubbling Under), and the video is not yet in rotation, but her appearances on TRL and "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" have rewarded her with a Pacesetter award on the Billboard 200 for largest percentage increase (a 37% jump from 7,329 to 10,019 copies). The album climbs #175->#127*, reversing the steep drop it experienced in the previous two weeks. Hot 100 ------- The re-issue of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" sells 11,000 copies to debut at #2 on Singles Sales and #94 on the Hot 100. The single first charted over 31 years ago as Harrison's first post-Beatles single, and topped the Hot 100 for four weeks in late 1970 and early 1971. No Doubt scores their first Hot 100 top 10 with "Hey Baby," but this is certainly not their first airplay hit. "Don't Speak" reigned Hot 100 Airplay for 16 weeks in 1997, second only to Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris" (18 weeks) in that chart's history. Alas, as an airplay-only track, "Don't Speak" was ineligible for the Hot 100. Billboard 200 ------------- Alan Jackson's new album "Drive" went a lot of extra miles. It debuts at #1 with sales of 423,000. In the SoundScan era, only six country albums - five by Garth Brooks, one by Tim McGraw - have ever registered bigger sales week; and McGraw earned his during a Christmas week, compared to the slow month of January that we are in now. In fact, "Drive" marks the biggest January opener in SoundScan's history, and the biggest January sales number since the phenomenon known as the "Titanic" soundtrack. Jackson's opening number, predicted by some to be over 500,000 based on first-day sales, may have been limited by the album's initial shipment of 675,000. Then again, that would appear to be sufficient since none of Jackson's previous albums debuted with more than 115,000. "Drive" owes its success to the lead single "Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)," a song about the events on Sept. 11. Jackson debuted the song at the Country Music Awards, and soon after it spent five weeks at #1 on Hot Country Singles & Tracks. After "Drive," Creed's "Weathered" is the only album that sells above 100,000 this week. Last week, in fact, "Weathered" was the only album that made the mark. The last time that only two albums hit six-digit was the chart for 11/7/1998, led by Jay-Z and Lauryn Hill. The last time that only one album did it was the chart for 7/12/1997, when Spice Girls managed their fifth and final week at the top, displacing Bob Carlisle, and Hanson peaked at #2 with sales of 98,000. Spice Girls and Hanson. Oh, what memories. CORRECTION ---------- The 01/19 update stated that by returning to #1 after four weeks of interruption, Usher's "U Got It Bad" matched a record set by Andy Gibb in 1977. In fact, Ace of Base's "The Sign" also had a non-consecutive run at #1 that was broken by four weeks - by R.
