Former major leaguer Gus Zernial dies at age of 87

FRESNO, Calif. -- Former major league outfielder Gus Zernial, who settled in
California's Central Valley after 11 years in the majors, has died.
The Fresno Bee reports that Zernial died in a Fresno hospice care center
Thursday. He was 87.
His daughter, Lisa Pearlstein, told the newspaper that he died from the
effects of congestive heart failure after a long illness.
During a career that began with the Chicago White Sox in 1949 and ended with
the Detroit Tigers in 1959, Zernial hit 237 homeruns and knocked in 776 runs.
In 1951 he led the American League with 33 homeruns and 129 RBIs, starting
the season with the White Sox, but playing most of the year for the
then-Philadelphia Athletics.
In 1953 he was named to the American League All-Star team while slugging 42
home runs for the Athletics.
In 1958 he was traded to the Tigers, where he finished his career.
