As it turns out, the problem was actually caused by a Firmware flaw in Realtek’s hardware. The setup is a tripleboot - XPProf/ Freespire/ Ubuntu7.04. Over the past couple of months driver updates for Realtek ethernet cards were being received & installed from the MS update site. The last one was installed about a week back (Driver build 5.671.601.2007 dt 6/1/2007). Since then the ethernet card refused to work in Freespire and Ubuntu. I spent a week searching all forums for answers and after reading this article simply opened device manager and rolled back the driver (build 5.667.412.2007 dt 4/12/2007). It now works without any issues in Linux. --
