Taking sentence-final (S-final) adverbial clauses—a comparatively understudied structure in Sinitic linguistics—as a case study, this presentation argues that theoretical knowledge and hypothesis-driven prediction remain indispensable for directing AI-assisted investigation toward genuinely productive insights. We first show how prosodic variation accounts for grammatical differences between Beijing Mandarin and Taiwan Mandarin and then demonstrate that prosody constrains the structure and interpretation of S- final adverbial clauses in Beijing Mandarin. These empirical and analytical insights provide a framework for predicting how corresponding structures should behave in varieties with distinct prosodic profiles, focusing on Taiwanese Southern Min (TSM). Finally, we use this case study to illustrate how AI can be incorporated into linguistic research: not as a substitute for theoretical reasoning, but as a tool for helping to review the literature, testing hypotheses, generating new questions, and expanding empirical coverage . We conclude by highlighting both the methodological opportunities and the potential pitfalls of AI-assisted linguistic inquiry. --
