As for the categories of progressive and continuous aspect, there appears to be a dearth of studies which are based on comprehensive, balanced samples; also, the existing research mostly tends to focus on description, rather than on typological and/or historical analysis. Moreover, the distinction between the categories of progressive and continuous aspect may be understood differently by scholars, thus making their analyses difficult to compare. In this talk, we present the results of two studies conceived as preliminary steps towards a comprehensive, typologically-informed survey of progressive and continuous aspect in Sinitic: the analysis of a phenomenon-based sample of 41 Sinitic varieties that employ a 在 zài-type progressive/continuous aspect marker placed after the verb phrase, and a survey of progressive/continuous aspect-marking constructions in a sample of 32 Yue dialects. After illustrating the morpho-syntactic strategies found in our samples, we shall discuss the typological patterns and areal distribution for those constructions, and their possible pathways of grammaticalization. Also, we shall offer comparative remarks with Sinitic languages having similar construction types for those aspectual categories. About the Speaker Professor Giorgio Francesco Arcodia (馬振國) is professor of Chinese language and linguistics at the Department of Asian and North African Studies, Ca' Foscari University of Venice. His research on Sinitic languages has been published in numerous journals and in edited volumes. He is the author of Lexical Derivation in Mandarin Chinese (Crane Publishing, 2012) and co-author of Chinese Linguistics: An Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2021). His work primarily focuses on Chinese linguistics and linguistic typology, with particular attention to Chinese dialectology, the areal typology of Sinitic languages, language contact, word formation processes, the expression of grammatical meaning, and the development of morphology.
