Phil Jackson is now a grandfather of three, and that's not even counting Andrew Bynum and Jordan Farmar. Jackson, 62, has reached a far point on life's grid where he is what he is – everything new only tweaking how things look, not changing how they are. We have an idea by now of who this man is: established in principles, very much younger in spirit than bones, still so tantalized by new challenges brought on by Kobe Bryant and the daily crossword puzzle alike. Jackson's has been a spiritual journey of lessons flowed rather than forced, even if there's no way Siddhartha would've wasted his time theorizing about calling timeouts in between an opponent's two foul shots to break the guy's rhythm. Jackson wrote a book in 1975, back when he played only as well as most in the NBA but pondered real life far more than them all. It details, for example, his eventual shift from drug use to meditation. Before that, though, he does call a 1973 acid trip with an actress on the beach in Malibu "at least as dramatic as the Knicks winning the championship" months before. It's a tremendously hard-to-find book, but it's incredibly enlightening as to Jackson's developing mind and worth reviewing now that he has the perch he does. It also resembles the gossipy style of Jackson's "The Last Season" – and in fact is hyped on the book cover as "A NO-HOLDS-BARRED LOOK AT THE SAVAGE WORLD OF PRO BASKETBALL." The fact that Jackson felt compelled to write a book at 29 is an indication where his life will lead, even if "Maverick" ends with him stressing these words: "I'm much more of a student of life than I am a teacher."
