Los Colchoneros would have lost by a far heavier deficit had De Gea not produced spectacular saves from David Villa, Xavi and Pedro Rodriguez, and as the last line of defence against some of the greatest attacking talent in the world, the prodigious youngster was inspired, and was hugely unfortunate to be on the losing side. Defenders Henrique (Racing Santander) The on-loan Barcelona defender helped the Verdiblancos to their first clean sheet of the season, keeping out Real Zaragoza and helping Miguel Angel Portugal’s men to their first league win. Furthermore, the Brazilian made his presence felt in the opposition penalty area too, heading home the opening goal in the 2-0 triumph when the match seemed destined for a stalemate. Carles Puyol (Barcelona) Recent history has shown the Vicente Calderon to be the most adverse away ground in the Primera Division for the current champions, but in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid, captain Carles Puyol truly provided a towering performance to navigate his side to victory. During periods where the hosts were in the ascendency, the World Cup winner was on hand to sweep away every cross and alleviate any danger, while keeping tabs on Diego Forlan. Puyol had missed the Hercules defeat through injury – you feel Pep Guardiola was glad to have him back. Jose Caceres (Sevilla) Another on-loan Barcelona stopper impressed as Caceres helped ease the pressure on coach Antonio Alvarez by netting the winning goal in Sevilla's 2-1 derby triumph over Malaga. The hosts had netted five in their last outing and had also went ahead in front of a raucous la Rosaleda audience, but Caceres, playing in his preferred central position, produced an accomplished display to keep out a vibrant three-pronged Boquerones forward line as well as popping up in first half injury time to notch his first goal for los Nervionenses. Midfielders Angel di Maria (Real Madrid) In a match where few of los Blancos’ starting line-up excelled, it took a wonder goal from the former Benfica winger to swing the pendulum in the favour of Jose Mourinho’s men. Hernandez rifled in what proved to be the winner from all 25 yards, a stunning strike that whistled into the top corner, and also laid on Juan Mata’s goal in an encouraging all-round performance that suggests the former Spain cap could be set to recreate the level of form that afforded him international recognition initially. Diego Perotti (Sevilla) With the absence of Jesus Navas through injury, the onus was on the young Argentine to provide the creative spark on the flanks for under-fire coach Antonio Alvarez, and in the intimidating atmosphere of la Rosalada, Perotti gave Malaga captain Jesus Gamez a torrid evening, notably turning him inside out to provide an assist for Alfaro's first half equaliser. Full of running but with skill and composure in tow, Perotti showed for the first time this season what he is truly capable of when on form, and played an instrumental role in what was a well-timed derby win after more European disappointment the midweek prior. Jonathan de Guzman (Mallorca) The Islanders pulled off a major coup by landing the ex-Feyenoord playmaker during the summer, and the former Netherlands u-21 international produced his most impressive display of the season so far in the 2-0 home defeat of Osasuna. De Guzman, who had been linked with moves to Chelsea and Valencia just a year ago, capped a fine attacking display by scoring the clincher after a 60-yard run on goal, which showcased his pace, dribbling ability and confidence in front of goal. Strikers Lionel Messi (Barcelona) The best player in the world makes his first appearance of the season, and it is unlikely to be his last, as he tore Atletico Madrid to shreds during the Blaugrana’s 2-1 triumph in the capital. His first goal had all the hallmarks of a Messi finish; lightning-quick movement with a deft flick to finish a slick move, and set Pep Guardiola’s side well on their way to banishing their run of three consecutive league defeats at the Vicente Calderon. A late ankle injury should not detract from another vintage display from the Argentine. Nilmar (Villarreal) The Yellow Submarines’ record purchase stepped up to the plate to net a clinical double to condemn Levante to defeat, and delight coach Juan Carlos Garrido. Nilmar linked well with Santi Cazorla to slot home the opener, before showing understanding with partner Giuseppe Rossi to race onto his through pass and dink neatly into the net. He finally looks capable of being the prolific scorer that the club craved, and this brace edged him level with Diego Forlan at the top of the Primera Division scoring charts. Fernando Llorente (Athletic Bilbao) Another La Liga week, another goal for the Spanish international, who continued his rich vein of form by netting a crucial equaliser for los Leones as they battled from two down to rescue a point. The tall frontman had missed two opportunities prior to his powerful header that levelled the match, and it is testament to his current confidence that he continued to put himself in positions to score until he finally found his touch. Three in three matches puts him on top of the Pichichi race along with team of the week colleague Nilmar and Diego Forlan.
