Ty Lawson has interest in playing for the Kings
Ty Lawson was once regarded as one of the upper-echelon point guards in the
NBA. Last season, he posted career lows in points, field goal percentage,
three-point percentage and free throw percentage. Now, he’s searching for an
opportunity to show his worth again even if it’s not in an up-tempo style
offense.
Lawson, 28, is open to playing in any system and even playing off the ball.
He has been working on moving without the ball and trying to add versatility
to his overall game this offseason.
He understands that an effective, well-rounded guard in today’s NBA must
play and move well without the ball, which Lawson has been working on with
his trainers, Chris Gaston and Ivorie Manning in Los Angeles.
Last offseason, Lawson was rumored to be traded to the Sacramento Kings due
to his ties with former head coach, George Karl. It never happened! On July
20, 2015, the Nuggets traded Lawson to the Rockets and it never worked out in
Houston.
He started at point guard in Houston’s first 11 games of the season under
coach Kevin McHale, but after McHale was fired, he was moved to the bench
under J. B. Bickerstaff.
On December 18, 2015, Lawson was suspended for two games and on January 7,
2016, he was suspended for three games by the NBA for driving under the
influence from an incident committed in July of 2015. The Rockets already had
too many distractions as a whole and soon after, on March 1, the Rockets
waived him in a buyout agreement.
Lawson definitely had a rough season but is ready to move on and help whoever
his next team is because he believes in his ability to put up big numbers as
he once did in this league.
Should the Kings take a gamble on Lawson?
The Kings really need a point guard and signing a talented player such as
Lawson, who can score and facilitate for his teammates, can help in the
short-term and it would give Vlade Divac more time to sort out his point
guard situation until next season.
The Kings have yet to inquire about his services, but that won’t stop Lawson
from working hard and being open to signing with Sacramento.
When I asked him if he was interested in playing for the Kings and playing
for Dave Joerger, he quickly responded, “Of course.”
