標題[外電] Kings co-owner clarifies remarks, reaffirms need for new

Sacramento Kings co-owner Joe Maloof told The Bee Wednesday his family's
interest in a new basketball arena has not waned, despite his comments this
week to a national news outlet.

In an interview with CNBC about his family's business interests, Maloof was
quoted saying "we don't need a new building as much as we did a couple years
ago" because the economy has made it harder for teams to sell luxury suites.

"If we can't fill the suites now, what's a new arena going to do?" Maloof
responded to a reporter's question. He said the Kings need to focus on ticket
sales and winning games.

During a Wednesday interview, Maloof clarified that building a new arena to
replace Arco remains important to the long-term success of the team, but the
Kings have more pressing problems to tackle right now, something luxury
suites can't solve.

"Maybe I didn't make the point right," Maloof said. "We do need a new arena.

"The point I was making is we need to refocus and get the season ticket
holders back. We have to bring more wins to the city. That's more important
than the new arena right now. After that, you have to look at your suites and
club seats. You can't depend on the luxury suites."

A Kings spokesman said Wednesday the team does not reveal how many of its 30
suites currently are sold.

The economic downtown has caused rethinking around the NBA about how many and
what type of suites and higher-priced seats teams need in order to be
competitive.

Darren Rovell, a sports business reporter who conducted the CNBC interview
with Maloof, says the Kings' main problem is not its lack of a new arena.

revenue generators if people show up," Rovell told The Bee last month. "New
arenas don't save businesses. Winning teams do."

Several NBA consultants, however, said arenas with upscale amenities –
including well-designed suites – help generate the revenues to pay better
players.

Mayor Kevin Johnson, who launched the city's current effort for a new sports
and entertainment center, said in an e-mail to The Bee the Kings have the
right approach.

to focus on: putting the customer first and building a great team," Johnson
wrote.

City officials said the proposal to build a new arena in the downtown
railyard is progressing. The City Council will get an update in July.

Asked about star player Tyreke Evans' citation Monday for allegedly driving
130 miles per hour on Interstate 80, Maloof told The Bee:
