OAKLAND - Kings point guard Mike Bibby on Wednesday was preparing
for a game that earlier in the day lost all significance in the
grand scheme.
Just after the team arrived for its game against the Golden State
Warriors, Bibby learned that his grandmother, Victorine Carmichael
, had suffered a heart attack and died.
The news did not come in the best manner.
"Someone called me to tell me they were sorry to hear about it,"
Bibby said, sitting in his uniform in front of his locker. "I was
like, For what? So then I called my mom, and she told me and asked
me who told me."
Mrs. Carmichael was the mother of Virginia Bibby, Mike's mother.
"I was told my grandmother had a heart attack on a plane going
somewhere," Bibby said. "I spent a lot of time growing up with her
because she was in Phoenix all the time."
Before the 97-91 loss, Bibby's eyes were red and teary in the locker
room. Teammates and members of the organization tried to weigh the
uncomfortable balance of giving him space and consoling him.
Buford asks Anthony for respect - The Kings didn't play worth a darn
Monday night in a loss at Denver, but swingman Rodney Buford
introduced himself to rookie star Carmelo Anthony.
Anthony drove to the basket on Buford, who not only cleanly blocked
the layin attempt but batted it over the sideline.
That was where the introduction continued.
"I told the young fella to get that ... out of here," Buford said.
"He told me, 'You know, I'm coming back at you.' "
Buford said he then gave Anthony a lesson on perspective.
"I said, 'C'mon, young fella, you get 30 shots a game, and I get three.'
But I had to tell the young fella, 'Just because I don't play doesn't
mean I can't play.' "
