Very few singers today can make the audience feel so comfortable and so close to them, but Chan does this effortlessly. She transformed her The Music Room concert at the Marina Bay Grand Theatre on Thursday, into a very intimate affair which felt more like a reunion with old friends than a concert. The concert was an understated yet moving show that saw Chan busting out her best hits like "Worry" and "Like You" as well as banter with the audience, sharing with them anecdotes about her life and her music. Chan took special care to acknowledge even the concert goers furthest from the stage whenever she had the chance, and made as much eye contact as possible with the people in the audience. Chan was charming, sexy, funny and a bit of a drama queen. She had the audience eating out of her hand throughout the show. Chan is, simply put, an amazing showman. Even so, it was her beautiful, rich vocals that truly impressed the audiences, moving them to applaud even when she paused between verses during her songs. Other highlights of her concert include a segment when she performed songs from musicals, as well as another when she sang unplugged. But the best portion of the show is undoubtedly when Chan surprised the audience by performing "Left and Right Hands", a beautiful Cantonese song originally written for the late Cantopop superstar Leslie Cheung, by Chan's long-time friend and collaborator Jimmy Ye. The whole theatre went quiet as Chan's silky smooth vocals melded with the music and brought the lyrics of the song to life. Although Chan's The Music Room concert showed a lot of forethought, polish and attention to detail, it had just one flaw - most of the audience could not see Chan very well at the theatre. Unless you sat in the first few rows of the theatre, you could not see Chan's face clearly and could only make out when she was laughing or giving a wink, but not actually see her expression. Alas, there was little space for video screens or even a video camera to capture and display a closer view of the singer in the theatre, forcing concert-goers seated far away from the stage to squint or simply use their imagination. In spite of this flaw, The Music Room is definitely still a show to catch. Even if your schedule is full, make room for Chan's The Music Room concert, which runs till October 15. -CNA/ha --
