Now Kit Chan tries her hand at the clothing industry. By Carmen Chan and Linda Lee [eastciti.com, December 11] We attended the official opening of Kit Chan's new store, Flowers In The Attic. Being a tad early, we stepped into the cosily-furnished shop and started looking around. Aware that only 1 sales assistant was present behind the counter, we ignored her and browsed through the clothes. The salesgirl saw us and cheerfully called out, "Please let me know if you need any help." We turned towards her to thank her and lo and behold, we were staring into the smiley face of Kit Chan herself. The store looks like someone's old attic room, vintage-looking but comfortable and cozy. Floral pictures hang on the green walls and a soft red velvet armchair sits at the corner. Beside it, a table of old, almost tattered books is juxtaposed with modern perky notebooks, bags and cushions. Why name it Flowers In The Attic? Kit said it was inspired by the title of a novel. "We want women to become little girls and enjoy themselves here. We want people to let down their hair and just relax when they come to the shop. The clothes are more fun and casual, unlike working clothes which are kind of boring," replied the tall, slim songstress and poet. Dressed in an asymmetrical blue top with large flowers, Kit said the store reminds a woman of the thrill of rummaging through the attic when she was a young girl and looking for treasures or clothes to play dress-up. Most of the clothes are bought from Hong Kong. They make trips overseas to look around and bring back some of the fashions. The bohemian-styled items are stylish and eclectic, not to mention extremely affordable. The apparel are pleasantly romantic and feminine, and exude that warm feeling of fond memories from a girl's childhood. http://www.mediacorpsingapore.com/008_trends/2000/shopping/2000121100_a.htm Kit Chan plays salesgirl at her boutique First, this musically-talented Singaporean makes it big in the region, and then she writes a book of poetry. Now Kit Chan tries her hand at the clothing industry. By Carmen Chan and Linda Lee Even the changing rooms did not escape that romantic touch. Inside it, a tall cylindrical paper light, a straw mat and a stool are closed off by Indian -inspired curtains. The set up looks like a Van Gogh painting. I stepped into the room to try on a white floral camisole and it suddenly brought back that secret hiding place feeling when I was a child and wanted to be left alone with my treasures. As Kit wanted her customers to do, I did become a little girl right there. It has always been a dream of Kit's and her partners, Iris Wong and Shell, to venture into the clothing industry and open up a boutique. She said, "Basically, I'm not really running the boutique because I'm not around most of the time. Although I try to help out as and when I can, I'm more like an assistant to my 2 other partners. We've always wanted to open an apparel shop because being girls, we're vain." Before Kit and her partners popped the champagne, who else was to arrive but none other than fellow musician, Tanya Chua. The 2 girls from Two Girls, who've made a name for themselves in Taiwan, came in next, followed by Ric from the band Dreamz FM. The gang of successful Singaporean musicians toasted to the opening of Flowers In The Attic, a toast to the celebration of girlhood memories. When most of the well wishes were over, Kit joked, "Please help yourselves to the food. If not, at least buy something!" I obediently purchased the white camisole and a floral cigarette case with a matching lighter. "By the way, I think I make a good salesgirl, honestly!" she added smilingly. Judging from the amiable way the singer-cum-shop-owner attended to us during launch, we couldn't agree more. Flowers In The Attic is located at The Heeren Annex, #04-35, Orchard Road. --
