In basketball, there's the principle of MVP,
the 'most valuable player' like players who can win a match all by themselves.
Players like Michael Jordan or Dirk Nowitzki.
Hollywood's MVP is Johnny Depp at the moment, who turns one movie after another
into a hit. Without Johnny Depp's grandiose performance as Captain Sparrow,
POTC would've been just a loud, colorful roller coaster, and without him,
Secret Window would've been just average.
'TV Spielfilm' (name of the mag) talked to the star
who lives with wife and children in paris and LA.
mag: The author you're playing in that movie has problems sleeping.
You've got two children, how about your sleep?
Johhny: I tell you, since the minute you have children the sleep withdrawl
starts (laughs). I fear it's going to be like that all my life -
which is totally ok by the way.
mag: Do you know any tricks to fall asleep ?
Johnny: When I sit on a couch and want to watch a film, I fall asleep
as soon as it starts. Thats my best soporific.
Maybe thats because I've been making films for such a long time
that they put me to sleep - especially the ones I play in! (laughs)
mag: Have you gotten over not getting an Oscar for POTC yet?
Johnny: I don't think about things like that. I swear,
it was enough to be nominated. I would've been paralyzed
if I had to go on stage and say thank you. I've been to the Oscars
and Golden Globes to demonstrate my respect to the industry.
I came to applaud everyone at the show.
mag: You are enormously successful. How do you manage not to be arrogant?
Johnny: Many, many years ago I played in a very awful movie with Hector Elizondo.
Hector is a theater pro, he's been in the business for ages.
We talked about money a lot because at that time i didnt have
any (laughs) and didn't know how to pay my rent. I asked him how money
changes people and he said: 'Money doesn't change people,
it exposes them. With money you can be the way you really are.
If you are an @#%$, you stay an @#%$, just a rich one.'
I've seen some people, who misbehaved towards others big time,
and I hate things like that.
mag: You're known as a person who tries to keep out of the spotlight.
Does the media attention bother you?
Johnny: I tolerate everything that concerns me, because
I chose this by myself.
It's different with my kids, they didn't ask for it,
to be besieged by paprazzi, when they want to swing in a park.
That's unfair, towards me and them.
mag: You're 40 now. Does this age have any special meaning for you?
Johnny: I'm almost 41 now. For me this was an unbelievably good year.
I couldn't have wished better. Being 40 feels good.
When my daughter was born, I felt as ME for the first time.
She's 5 now, my son almost 2. I love being a dad and I believe
I'm pretty good at it. The only competition I wanna win is
the one of the BEST DAD. Everything else is working out.
mag: What are your experiences with your adopted country, France?
Johnny: The French accepted me very friendly.
I couldn't speak a single word of French
and I remember a few alienated looks.
But they've been really patient with me.
My parents live in Kentucky, we often visit them with our children,
but Vanessa wouldn't be able to live there.
She would miss her family too much, these bonds are very tight.
