Jacky Wu is, as everyone in Taiwan knows, the most popular guy on local television. He hosts six separate variety talk shows for a grand total of 21 hours of airtime a week. He was Channel V*s "Favorite Chinese Person of the Year " in 2000. He owns a dozen restaurants, a record label that just put out theyear*s hottest new Mando-pop star and his own cable channel, ET Jacky. TIME reporters Macabe Keliher and Maureen Tkacik tracked him down recently in the midst of a hectic week to talk about his career and future plans. Edited excerpts: T:You are arguably the most popular entertainer in Taiwan today. So what's it like to be Jacky Wu? W:Being an entertainer sucks! Your privacy is continuously encroached; the local media just does not know when to stop. The other month I was walking down the street late at night with a woman friend, and a TV station got me on tape. They played the tape every 15 minutes with headlines that I had a new girlfriend. T:Two years ago the media also attacked you for having kids out of wedlock. W:Yes,they revealed that I had grown kids...and had been lying to everybody. But really, I don't think it unacceptable to have girlfriends. I also happen to have kids by mine. I like kids. T:You have also faced a lot of criticism from feminists for on-air remarks that were deemed sexist. W:Everyone finds something to get angry about, but I am far from sexist. I am the only entertainer to openly support more women in politics. I'm actually a really nice guy and I wouldn't criticize people like that. T:How did you start out in showbiz? W:I used to travel around to college campuses to perform. I would play guitar and my friend would sing. We would split the money 60-40; I got more because I could play guitar and that's what drew the crowd. I did about 2,000 performances. We would drive all over Taiwan to play. That's when I had the scariest moment of my life. T:Which was? W:Once we were driving on a freeway late at night when my friend, who was driving, fell asleep at the wheel. I suddenly saw two words: Chinese Petroleum. I thought we were going to crash into the gas truck. T:So you went from near-death on the freeway to having your own chauffeur? W:Not quite. In the early 1990s all the game shows in Taiwan were singing shows. I used to go on those and would win contests. In 1997-98 the singing shows turned into variety shows and I happened to be in the right place at the right time and became a host. T:What allowed you to rise then? W:I created a new style of humor, and broke with old habits. Also, when I interview people I don't venture deep into their background. I just ask questions about them to understand them. T:Everyone says your reactions are very quick...the quickest in the business. Is this a natural talent or something you cultivated? W:In Taiwan we have these street sideshows in the evening. I used to take my dinner and sneak out to watch the shows every night. I memorized everything they said and from this began to cultivate my own reactions and humor. T:Your humor has really struck a chord among the younger generation. I walk around the local university campuses and hear students mimicking jokes or words you have created. W:I know my audience very well. Like I said, I performed over 2,000 times at campuses in my early days. I know what young people want and what they like. I only have one boss and that is my audience. T:Producers who work with you say you are the only person that they know who can operate on two hours sleep a night. How do you do it? W:It's all in the mind. Tonight I hosted a game show then ran over to do some rounds and say a few entertaining words at a presidential dinner. Now I am sitting here chatting with you, and in a moment I get to go host two of Taiwan's most vocal opinion leaders on my political talk show. Who needs to sleep? T:Now, at the pinnacle or your career as a comedian and host, you are moving into the direction of political commentary. Why? W:I have been an entertainer for 20 years, and to tell you the truth, it gets a little boring after a while. I am an *ideas* man. I have lots of ideas and lots of things that I want to learn and do. The political talk show is a new field for me.Three months ago when I started the show I didn't know anything about politics. Now I can talk about any current issue. In another three months I will be able to provide background information on any political topic. T:This is not a move into politics, is it? W:No, I am politically neutral. But I am bored with the old stuff (that I've been doing). The political talk show gives me the opportunity to do something new. T:Since you don't support any political positions, let's talk about sex. W:Great! T:What do you look for in a woman? W:It's most important that we can get along. I'm an easygoing guy, but to be able to get along with someone is not an easy thing. T:Don't be so diplomatic. W:OK, she should be 166-cm tall, thin with a full chest, very pretty, and have long hair. T:Are these the characteristics of your current girlfriend? W:I don't have a girlfriend now. I am too busy. T:Where did you get your English name Jacky? W:When I was a kid I really liked airplanes, and would take the No. 5 bus out to the American military base to watch the jets take off and land. Since I was around so much I got to be friends with the kids of pilots at the base, and the pilots themselves. One of the pilots of the jet I liked most was named Jack. He used to joke with me and call me Jacky, after himself. He said when I got older he would take me up in his jet.Of course he lied to me,but I kept the name. T:By doing so many different things, and with your face all over the media, are you afraid that people will get tired of watching you in a few years? W:Fantastic! I'm glad you asked that.I wanted to retire last year but my contracts were not up. What I am doing now is nothing new; it gets boring and it is not what I want to do with my life. T:What do you want to do? W:I want to educate kids. I want to move onto bigger projects involving educational programs on the Internet. I would act as a host to inspire and entertain kids. We are currently writing many of the courses; we're just waiting until Taiwan's broadband sector opens to be able to make the project feasible. Monday,May.07,2001 Time Asia -- -- 皆さん ▁▂▃ ▄▅ どうかご無事で...
