Indians right fielder Shin-Soo Choo underwent surgery on his left thumb in
Cleveland on Tuesday, the club announced.
In the operation, performed by renowned hand specialist and surgeon Dr.
Thomas Graham at the Cleveland Clinic, Graham openly reduced and internally
fixated a displaced fracture. Recovery time is eight to 10 weeks, the club
said.
Choo suffered a displaced fracture after being hit on the hand with a pitch
from Giants left-hander Jonathan Sanchez in a loss in San Francisco on
Friday. He was placed on the disabled list the following day.
"I just feel bad that I can't help the team anymore," Choo said on Saturday.
"We might make the playoffs. We had a good start and I can't help the team. I
feel sad."
Choo is hitting .244, with five home runs and 28 RBIs in 72 games. He was
homerless in his last 125 at-bats, dating back to May 13. The right fielder
had, however, hit safely in 29 of his last 36 games, and posted a .370
average over his past eight contests.
The Indians are in Phoenix for a series against the D-backs.
