AL TOP5 Relievers

1.RHP Jonathan Papelbon, Red Sox.
With a late-moving fastball and hard forkball, Papelbon
was almost unhittable last season-opponents batted
a sickly .146 against him.
2.RHP Mariano Rivera, Yankees.
Rivera, 38, showed signs of slipping last season, but
that was the first time he had posted an ERA north of 2.00
since 2002. His track record speaks for itself.
3.RHP J.J. Putz, Mariners.
He rivaled Papelbon for the title of the A.L.'s most
dominating closer, converting 40 of 42 save chances. Putz
relies on the combination of a 96-mph fastball and an
85-mph split-finger pitch.
4.RHP Joe Nathan, Twins.
Over the past four seasons, he has converted 92 percent
of his save opportunities. Nathan features a mid-90s
fastball and can cut it in on lefthanders.
5.RHP Rafael Betancourt, Indians.
Betancourt, a late bloomer at 32, saw his fastball-curveball
command go from good to otherworldly last season, when
he struck out 80 and walked just nine on his way to a 1.47 ERA.
