標題[問題] 關於颱風的一句話~

看ielts字彙那本發現有句話很奇怪：
Typhoons north of the equator rotate counterclockwise, while south of
the equator they are known as cyclones and spin clockwise.
請問這句話是什麼意思呢？

我這樣拆句子，還是覺得不明白：
Typhoons( north of the equator) rotate counterclockwise,
赤道北部的颱風逆時鐘轉，
While( south of the equator) they are known as cyclones and spin clockwise.
正如大家所知，南赤道的颱風as syclones(以氣旋的身分？這是啥怪句子..)順時鐘轉。
"they are known as cyclones and spin clockwise."中的"they"，是指颱風嗎？
