The 27-year-old, who joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid last summer, has established himself as a key member of Mauricio Pochettino's defence. Alderweireld was a permanent fixture in Tottenham's Europa League fixtures, appearing in all 10 of the club's continental clashes. Spurs progressed from Group J in confident fashion but were eliminated at the last-16 stage of the tournament at the hands of Borussia Dortmund. Alderweireld is one of five defenders to be recognised for their individual performances and is joined in the squad by Dortmund's Mats Hummels, Shakhtar Donetsk's Darijo Srna, plus Sevilla pair Adil Rami and Mariano. Alderweireld's stellar performances did not go unnoticed on these shores either as he also secured a place in the PFA Team of the Year earlier this month. However, the Belgium international insisted that he was not a player who "needed" recognition in the wake of his achievement. Meanwhile, two other Premier League players were singled out for their contributions to the Europa League in the form of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea and Liverpool midfielder Emre Can. A total of seven Sevilla players were included after the Spanish side won an unprecedented third successive title at the expense of Liverpool in Basel on Wednesday night.
