Saturday 2nd February Premier League - Spurs 1 Manchester United 1
The new found steel that seemed to have coincided with the introduction of
Jonathan Woodgate into our previously rickety defence was again in evidence
here, and we looked to have exacted at least some revenge for the previous
month's FA Cup defeat at Old Trafford. Until the 93rd minute that is, upon
which we promptly reverted to type and allowed Carlos Tevez to equalise with
a header from a corner, though replays suggested our very own Michael Dawson
may have actually been the culprit. Either way, sitting here at the end of
May, we can take comfort from the fact that United's equaliser may have been
the difference between them and Chelsea lifting the Premier League trophy.
Saturday 9th February Premier League - Derby County 0 Spurs 3
A stroll up the M1, a stroll in the (Pride) park, a stroll back down the M1.
This really was the closest the Premier League could get to an pre-season
friendly in February. The highlight of the game was undoubtedly the Derby
fans' determination not to allow the dreadful performances of their team to
interfere with their season in the big time.
Thursday 14th February UEFA Cup - Slavia Prague 1 Spurs 2
We probably got away with this one as, having raced into a deserved early
lead through Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane, we took our foot off the
pedal massively to the point where we were practically under siege for the
last half hour. A major error by Radek Cerny gave Slavia hope, and they could
well have sent us back home with our tails between our legs had the ball
bounced their way more often.
Thursday 21st February UEFA Cup - Spurs 1 Slavia Prague 1
Again, we seemed worryingly close to being on the wrong end of a major upset
as we continuously put away a spirited Slavia side. Jamie O'Hara's first goal
for the club should have put the tin lid on any hopes of a Slavia comeback,
but give a side with even a hint of ability this much room, and they will
cause major problems. So it was that we spent the second half with Slavia a
goal away from forcing extra time. Fortunately, with the cup final just three
days away, the energy-sapping extra half hour was just about avoided.
Sunday 24th February Carling Cup Final - Spurs 2 Chelsea 1
A long time in the future, when I look back on the days that stand out above
all others, Sunday 24th February 2008 will undoubtedly sit pretty high on the
list. From the minute I left my house and began the three hour walk to
Wembley Way to the moment I found myself surrounded by the victorious Spurs
squad, it was truly a special day. If beating Arsenal in the semi-final was
greeted with a cautionary glee, then this win allowed us to truly celebrate,
knowing full well that both of our closest rivals had been vanquished on the
way to our first trophy in nine years. Let the outsiders say what they will
about the importance of the competition, football is about winning trophies,
and only three clubs in England did that this season. I'm proud to say that
Tottenham Hotspur are one of them.
