Bale has put pen to paper on a 10m move into the Premiership from Southampton after Martin Jol persuaded him to join Spurs. The Welsh teen starlet passed a medical in London yesterday before travelling back to his home city of Cardiff. Jol is due to formally announce the capture of Bale today, although it will have to be agreed in co-ordination with Southampton. Tottenham will pay 6m as a down payment, with the further 4m made up from Premiership appearances, European qualification and winning a set number of Wales caps. A source close to Bale said, “Gareth knows that Manchester United and other big clubs were in for him. “But he has been impressed with what Tottenham have had to say and expects to get first-team football next season.” The most expensive previous single transfer involving a Welshman was the 7.5m Wimbledon paid West Ham for John Hartson. Craig Bellamy cost Liverpool 6m, while Gary Speed joined Newcastle from Everton for 5.5m.
