http://www.charlotte.com/sports/story/684827.html The word of the day is “contingencies.” In a draft where there's negligible difference between the third- and 10th-best player, it's impossible for the Charlotte Bobcats to reliably predict who will be available at No.9 tonight. So to some extent, they've stopped trying. They're exploring the chance to trade up, but short of that, they're preparing for contingencies. So with that in mind, let's explore six ways tonight could play out with the ninth pick. If the Bobcats select UCLA guard Russell Westbrook … THE POTENTIAL BENEFIT: They need another point guard to, at minimum, back up Raymond Felton. (Remember: Felton is the only point guard under contract for the Bobcats.) While Westbrook isn't a pure point guard, he's a fine perimeter defender. The NBA has cracked down on hand-checking along the perimeter, so having a player with the feet to cut off penetration is crucial. New Bobcats coach Larry Brown will demand defense, and Westbrook has the tools to deliver. THE RUB: If you're looking for instant gratification, Westbrook isn't your guy. By Brown's description, the Bobcats would be drafting Westbrook for the future. He's not an experienced point guard, so patience would be crucial. THE BOTTOM LINE: It's doubtful Westbrook will be available at No.9, but he makes sense if he's there. Bobcats managing partner Michael Jordan wants to address a need with this pick. A point guard who plays defense does that. If the Bobcats select Arizona guard Jerryd Bayless … THE POTENTIAL BENEFIT: It's probably a long shot that Bayless would be there, but they'd get a dynamic scoring point guard. He'd sure prop up the scoring with the second unit, and the attention he'd draw defensively might open shots for Matt Carroll in the corner. THE RUB: Is this guy just a little too much like what they already have in Felton? They're both guys who score at least as much as they create for others, yet need to be primarily point guards to be effective at their size. THE BOTTOM LINE: If Bayless is there, the talent is probably too apparent to pass on him. However, he has a big ego and would complicate the minute distribution in the backcourt. If they select Stanford center Brook Lopez … THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS: What's not to like about drafting a low-post scorer with true center size? An NBA team turning its back on a center is something like an NFL team turning its back on drafting a left tackle – you never know when you'll get another chance to acquire one. THE RUB: Lopez would not be a particularly good complement to Emeka Okafor, who is already a core piece of this team. Neither Lopez nor Okafor is a particularly fluid athlete. One of them would have to guard the power forward, a position increasingly populated by sleek jump-shooters. THE BOTTOM LINE: If he's there, the Bobcats have to seriously consider drafting him because his value is too obvious to a team drafting ninth. If they select Texas point guard D.J. Augustin … THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS: The prototypical Larry Brown point guard does precisely as instructed, doesn't count his shots and measures success in victories, not all-rookie teams. In basketball IQ and attitude, Augustin already fits what Brown sometimes has to will his point guard into becoming. THE RUB: He's a little guy and that's not going to change. Teams will be able to throw the ball over Augustin's outstretched arms, and you have to question how his body will stand up to the pounding of an NBA season. THE BOTTOM LINE: One way or another, the Bobcats have to add another point guard for the start of next season. Augustin is different from Felton; but it's yet to be determined whether he's better. Some scouts wonder if Augustin will end up a career backup at the NBA level. If they select LSU forward Anthony Randolph … THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS: If everything goes just so, Randolph could end up a combo forward, with the quickness and skill to dribble past the big guys and the length to go over the smaller guys. The comparison to Chris Bosh is a reach, but the guy is graceful and coordinated for his height the way Bosh always was. THE RUB: He's not close to being physically developed by NBA standards. He'll get pushed around something terrible as a rookie and one scout said it could be two seasons or more before he's ready to contribute in an NBA rotation. That's a long time horizon for a top-10 pick. THE BOTTOM LINE: His lacking strength means he'd have to play small forward more than power forward in the foreseeable future. That means Randolph would join a crowd of small forwards (Gerald Wallace, Jared Dudley and Jason Richardson part-time.) If they select Indiana guard Eric Gordon … THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS: There's little doubt they'd be adding a player good enough to be in an NBA rotation. He averaged nearly 21 points against Big Ten competition in his only college season. He has size and the kind of big, sturdy frame that can stand up to NBA pounding. THE RUB: Managing partner Michael Jordan would really like to address a need with the ninth pick and it's hard to view shooting guard as a need on a team short on point guards and big men. Richardson ended the season as this team's best player and the Bobcats made a large financial commitment to Carroll at the same position. THE BOTTOM LINE: It's probably unlikely Gordon will still be available when the Bobcats pick ninth.
