Johnson's in elite company By SEKOU SMITH The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 03/12/06 For anyone trying to put Hawks co-captain Joe Johnson's season into perspective, consider this: he is one of just four players in the NBA — LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Allen Iverson are the others — averaging better than 20 points and six assists this season. And his three 40-point games this season make him the first Hawks player since Dominique Wilkins (who had eight 40-point games during the 1992-93 season) to accomplish that feat. With his 40 points and 13 assists in Indiana last month, Johnson became only the third player this season to pile up at least 40 points and 10 assists in a game. "What's that saying, 'Ball don't lie?' " Hawks guard Tyronn Lue said. "Well, numbers don't lie. I think other people are starting to realize that he is one of the most dangerous all-around players in the league." ‧ NO CHILDRESS: Originally scheduled to return to action Saturday night against Chicago, Hawk second-year forward Josh Childress missed his third straight game while recovering from a sprained ankle. Childress, who was injured in a Feb. 3 home loss to Sacramento, had run up an impressive streak of 11 straight games scoring in double figures. But he rolled his ankle against the Kings, and Hawks co-captain Al Harrington tripped over Childress and fell on his leg. "He can't sprint right now," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said of Childress, who was playing his best basketball of the season before being injured. "We have to make sure he's all healed up before we get him back out there. We don't want to rush it." Childress hasn't practiced since being injured and won't be back on the practice floor until early this week at best. "I figure by Tuesday I can hit the practice floor," Childress said. "That's the target." ‧ EDWARDS BACK: Second-year center John Edwards returned to the active list Saturday night. He missed Tuesday's win over Golden State with a sprained right ankle, suffered last Sunday while working out on an off day. ‧ TALE OF TWO TEAMS: Johnson has already bettered the then-career-high 40 points he scored against the Bulls in the last meeting between these two teams, a 111-99 Hawks loss at the United Center Jan. 28. But since then it's been the Hawks and not the Bulls who have been on a bit of a tear. While the Hawks have compiled a 9-8 record since then, the Bulls were just 7-12 before Saturday night's game. "It's like we've talked about the last few weeks," Woodson said. "We're not the same team we were then. We've grown up a lot since then. But you can't take anything away from Chicago. They are still in the playoff mix, and that's where everybody wants to be this time of year."
