Woodson’s way paying off By Sekou Smith Wednesday, February 22, 2006, 03:50 PM After what seems like months and months of merciless criticism of a guy (Mike Woodson), I think it’s time we all recognize what’s going on right now with the Hawks’ young players and the work that’s been done both by the coaching staff and the players. They are all starting to get it. Their roles, their strengths and weaknesses, their value to this Hawks team (in all its 16-35 splendor) and the fact that they’re not going to get anywhere without going 100 miles an hour like they did in Tuesday night’s loss in Detroit. So maybe Woodson was right to bring Marvin Williams along the way he did; the kid’s been fantastic in his last two games and has shown steady signs of improvement all season long. Maybe he was right to keep Josh Smith in the starting lineup (dude was sick Tuesday night, that’s a good thing, with 10 points, 15 rebounds, seven blocks and five assists) and allow the team’s most physically gifted player to play through his mistakes. Maybe he was right to find a more comfortable role for Josh Childress (two opposing team management types have praised his basketball IQ and tenacity to me in the last week). And perhaps he was right to find niche roles for both Royal Ivey and Salim Stoudamire rather than exposing them to responsibilities they’re not yet capable of handling. I’m not saying Woodson’s perfect, nobody is and he realizes that. But in a situation where you’re faced with this many young guys as a coach, this idea that you can just turn the entire operation over and just see what happens is ridiculous. He’s taken his lumps but someone from every team they’ve faced in the past month has commented to me about the growth they’ve seen in this team. I guess I don’t pay as much attention to that as an outside observer would because like you all, I’m watching these guys on a daily basis with little time to step back and assess their progress in a broader scope. Now, for Wednesday’s YOU BE THE GM fantasy trade tidbit (and all of this is just my own musings) — If you want to get the two bigs you so desperately need, why not send Al Harrington to the Lakers for Chris Mihm and Slava Medvedenko? It works. Check the numbers. And Mihm is a defensive presence inside that the Hawks are lacking from anyone other than Josh Smith.
