Williams showing more signs of progress By SEKOU SMITH The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 02/23/06 The conversation between Hawks coach Mike Woodson and rookie forward Marvin Williams didn't last long after Tuesday night's loss in Detroit. Woodson said he just wanted to point out that he and the coaching staff noticed the same thing that everyone else has lately, Williams is starting to emerge as a major factor of the Hawks' bench. He scored a team-high eight points in the first quarter against Seattle Wednesday night at Philips Arena. Williams has company, too. The Hawks' reserves outscored their Detroit counterparts 46-10 Tuesday night and were the main reason the Hawks were able to rally from an early 15-point deficit. "I think we've seen some signs from all our young guys," Woodson said. "I singled Marvin out after the game the other night because he's really stepped up his game and shown us that some of the things we've been teaching as a coaching staff have really started to sink in. "I think the same goes for Josh Smith. They've just come on lately, and that's a testament to the work they've put in since we started." Both Smith and Williams scored in double figures in three consecutive games prior to Wednesday night's game against Seattle at Philips Arena. Salim Stoudamire came into the game having scored double figures in four of his past five games. And Josh Childress came in riding a six-game double-figure streak, including a season-high 21 in last week's win over the Lakers in Los Angeles and 18 in Tuesday night's loss in Detroit. "The process has been different for each one of those guys," Woodson said. "I haven't been nearly as tough on Marvin and Salim as I was on the Joshes last year, even though I'm sure those guys don't think so. With all of them I think the major difference between early in the season and now is that they're playing with a high level of confidence. And that's a great thing to see." ‧ Deadine approaches: In the absence of a last-minute blockbuster deal, rarely seen around the trade deadline, the Hawks could spend the day without any activity. "You never know what's going to happen," Woodson said. "Coaches understand that the trade deadline is something we have to suffer through. Once it passes, you just move on and keep working." ‧ Swift stays back: Sonics center Robert Swift did not make the trip to town. After suffering a broken nose in practice Monday he was sent back to Seattle, where he had a successful surgery to repair the damage. He is expected to be out for a week.
