Jason Schmidt, who could take over the fifth-starter job at some point , is nearing the start of an injury rehabilitation assignment, nearly 11 months after right shoulder surgery, but he won't be ready by May 17. Another option would be 20-year-old phenom Clayton Kershaw, who has a 1.08 ERA at Double-A Jacksonville and who threw one inning in relief on Wednesday.
