Sports Illustrated selected West among the six award recipients named by the magazine, which includes MVP (Minnesota’s Kevin Garnett), Rookie of the Year (Denvers Carmelo Anthony), Defensive Player (Detroit’s Ben Wallace), Sixth Man (San Antonio’s Manu Ginobili), Most Improved (Portland’s Zach Randolph), and Coach (Utah’s Jerry Sloan). West was honored for the first time in his career as NBA Executive of the Year by the league after the 1994-95 season when he served as Executive Vice President for the Los Angeles Lakers.
